The area where the town of Sardara is situated has known the ancient and constant presence of mankind, as witnessed by the interesting well-shaped nuraghe of S. Anastasia from IX-VIII century b.C., situated by the curative water springs that must have been amongst the most important on the island at the time, that because of their therapeutic properties where renamed "de is dolus".

In Roman times the Aquae Neapolitanae thermal centre was founded, as mentioned by Tolomeo (II century a.C.) and in the Itinerarium Antonini (beginning of III century a.C.), where a village arose and still present in Medieval times when it was infact mentioned as "villa Santa Maria de Is Acquas" in the peace treaty stipulated in 1388 between giudicessa d'Arborea, Eleonora, and the king of Aragona Giovanni I.

The settlement rose in medieval times maybe attracted by the nearby Castle of Monreale, and was part of the Bonorzuli curate.

In 1470 the marquis of Oristano Leonardo Alagon conquered this important and strategic centre by beating

the Aragonese at Uras, but the occupation didn't last long as e Alagon was beaten himself in the battle of Macomer (1478) and from this date the castle and its nearby settlement became definitively Aragonese.

Sardara was then included in the barony of Monreale and so incorporated in the Quirra County, in the Carroz feud.

Sardara can be considered one of the main centres of archaeological interest and with the Siddi sight and Villanovaforru, Barumini and the Giara forms a circuit of attraction of international importance. Not to be missed the Archaeological Museum VILLA ABBAS and the SANCTUARY OF SANTA ANASTASIA with a well-shaped temple now situated in the town centre for public display.
